ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: For months we’ve been talking about Big Brother in the workplace. Now NSA whistleblower Russell Tice has the whole world talking about how the U.S. government has been monitoring the phone calls of millions of Americans – without a search warrant.
Just like the employee monitoring software legally used by millions of employers, the government technology searches for key words or phrases, then selects particular conversations for closer examination. While there are many legal layers yet to be peeled back before we can comment on the Bush administration’s activities in this regard, we can say with certainty that in light of the federal government position on privacy, employees should expect that whatever they say on an employer-owned telephone or cell phone, can and will be monitored.
