ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: Northwest Airlines wins the corporate insensitivity award of the week!
The Smoking Gun website reported on 8/21/06 that in a recent packet of information given to laid-off workers, the company included a booklet entitled, “101 Ways to Save Money”, prepared by an outside consultant, which included such great tips as the following:
- “don't be shy about pulling something you like out of the trash”
- “write letters instead of calling”
- “make your own baby food”
- “use public transportation”
- “hang clothes out to dry”
- “skip annual full mouth Xrays”
- “if you are leaving the room for more than five minutes, turn off the lights”
- “borrow a dress for a big night out”, and
- “move to a less expensive place to live.”
After employee complaints, Northwest apologized and yanked the pamphlet from undistributed packets.
I wonder how much severance pay could have gone to these displaced workers if the company had saved that consulting fee?
