ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: Relying upon the Bible's book of Timothy, a minister of The First Baptist Church in Watertown, New York, has declared that God "does not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent".
That sure was news to Mary Lambert, one of the church's Sunday School teachers, when she got her pink slip. Apparently for the past 54 years, it was OK for her to teach Sunday School to both men and women, but presto, after this "new" interpretation of the ages-old Bible, she HAD to be fired.
You might think that what a church does is a private matter; however, in this case, the same minister that came up with this "new" interpretation about the role of women also serves as a member of the city council.
Do you think this minister can keep his religious beliefs out of his role as an elected official, or will he adopt a "the Bible tells me so" position -- with which, I assure you, many individuals would disagree?
