What can divorced women with careers and children do to compete in today's workplaces?
7/26/2007

ROBIN'S PERSPECTIVE: Moms are a force of nature. We manage to have the energy to take care not only of ourselves, but to nurture and love our children, engineer the smooth running of our homes and the family’s social lives, keep everyone in food, clothing and other supplies, and in most instances, find a way to meet the demands of our employers, co-workers and clients.

When you are a divorced mom, these challenges can be overwhelming at times. As Workplace Legal Advisor with www.FirstWivesWorld,com, I am getting a lot of inquiries about how divorced moms can compete in today's workplaces. If you are going through a period when the demands of your home and personal life make progress in your work life seem like the impossible dream, refocus the way you look at yourself and your abilities, and consider some of these ways your status as a divorced mom makes you super-qualified to succeed at work:

1.) Single moms can tap into their motherhood training to help them as leaders in the workplace – being a mom can teach a woman how to be authoritative, direct, instructive, yet nurturing and supportive. Being single can help a woman learn how to be more assertive and independent, as well – all of which help in leadership roles. Sell these skills in the marketplace.

2.) Moms can also take advantage of that “emotional intelligence” they gain from being around and taking care of children. This intelligence translates into “people skills” which is also something a single mom can use to her advantage in the workplace.

3.) Being on your own and in charge of your brood also helps women develop skills in multi-tasking under pressure and dependability, both of which are tremendously useful in the fast-paced demanding workplace. If you can juggle all the personal and home responsibilities above – without the support staff that corporations typically provide -- then managing a corporate function or department or two could seem like child’s play!

4.) At-home single moms can tap into the market for jobs that are being outsourced overseas – they may have the background experience and training that make them more attractive than an overseas novice. The fact that they may be available to train on site also may make them a more suitable candidate.

5.) Finally, single moms really need the money, but also need to get home to tend to the kids - as such, they are bound to be harder, more committed workers who don't waste time at work so they can get the job done, and then get home!
